I have grouped my photographs in galleries arranged in descending order alphabetically. They tend to follow my areas of principal interest, namely, nature (Fauna and Flora), travel (by country, or smaller divisions for often-visited areas) and People. Only the "People-street" gallery is generally available. "People- portraits" and "People-nudes" are available only to subjects of the images, and only on a request basis.
Some images appear in more than one gallery. For example, some colour images appear in their original colour but also have been converted to black and white and thus appear in the original gallery related to source as well as in the black and white gallery. Other images appear in one of the Flora or Fauna galleries as well as in the original source (location) gallery. In addition, I have taken photos from a variety of galleries to include in the "My personal favourites" gallery. What I mean by "favourites" is either that I would hang them on my wall or the circumstances of their taking are particularly meaningful to me.
Nature photography is my passion, and the subject to which I devote most of my photography time. That is the subject which most inspires me artistically, as well as providing me with the opportunity to be at one with nature and a higher power.
In that regard, a quote from Guy de Maupassant best describes one of my principal motivators:
"In everything there is an unexpected element because we are prone by habit to use our eyes only in combination with the memory of what others before us have thought about the thing we are looking at. The most insignificant thing contains some little unknown element. We must find it."
I try not only to find that little unknown element , but also to share it with others in my photographs, with the hope that I will increase awareness and enjoyment of the natural world and all it has to offer.
Travel photography represents the roots of my interest in photography, and I continue to enjoy it. I have had the good fortune to be able to travel widely. In this travel photography, I try to provide a feel for the place I have been. Thus, it is varied in its content. Often they are often captured in less than ideal circumstances because of time and other constraints, I hope that these images will provide the viewer with a glimpse of some of the world's interesting places.
My people photographs are divided first into two types, those captured "on the street" , usually taken on my travels, where I control little or nothing about the subject or the light and those where I have a greater measure of control, over the posing or over the lighting or both.
The first category is found in the gallery "People-street" where I have minimal control over anything, but particularly over the light. They are taken on my travels. Some may think of these as snapshots or candid images (and some are), but many are more than that, taken on request after involvement with the subject and some even being posed to a certain extent.
The second category is primarily found in the gallery "People-portraits", where I generally exercise more or less control over the light. These photographs are about my relationship with the subject, and the control of pose and light. This category is actually divided into a third gallery "People-nudes" which includes nudes and glamour work where, again , I generally control the light. I separate both of these categories and make them available only to the models and on request out of respect for the privacy of the models. The photos in both of these galleries are about achieving an effect desired by the subject, and about the control of the light as an artistic endeavour.
Although I have done some wedding photography over the years, none of my wedding photography appears on the website since I consider it personal to those involved and I have no wish to encourage further work in that area. It would take a great deal of money and a personal interest in the marrying parties to renew my interest in that aspect of my photography.
A word about the numbering system is in order. My numbering convention is based on the chronological ordering of my image storage. A number including 6 digits in the form of 'ab-cd-ef' indicates an image scanned from a slide original. A similar 6 digit number with the first number being 'abN' instead of 'ab' means it originates from a negative instead of a slide original. In both cases, the lower the first number, the earlier the photograph in my career (the 01-cd-ef series, for example, starts in the summer of 1967). A number with 'DSC' means the original image is a digital file.
I offer a word about some recurring naming convention short forms. NP=national park; SP=state park; PP=provincial park, in each case explaining where the photograph was taken. Otherwise, the title indicates in a general way where the photograph was taken, with more or less specificity.
I hope you enjoy the images. I would enjoy receiving your comments, which you can do through this website, or by emailing me at the contact address provided.
